Abstract

The Research Center of Andean Crops (CICA, for its Spanish acronym) at the San Antonio de Abad National University of Cusco (UNSAAC, for its Spanish acronym), has the Potato Research Program, which has as objectives the conservation of a superior collection of germplasm and the genetic improvement of native cultivars. Through the Project: " Ex situ conservation of native potato and the release of varieties for regional agriculture" financed by Camisea, Gas Canon, it was possible to release three varieties of potato, one of them called “MORADA CICA”. The new potato variety MORADA-CICA is a tetraploid genotype with native progenitors. This genetic condition grants it a wide limit of climatic tolerance in the different inter-Andean valleys and high areas of the Cusco Region and other regions. Its yield is superior to 35 tons of tuber per hectare, of high quality with dry matter higher than 23% and yellow meat. It has high resistance to Phytophthora infestans and other diseases, as well as high tolerance against insect damage. It is a very vigorous variety that allows the escape effect to its biotic and abiotic enemies.
