Abstract

Restoring degraded soils requires sustainable approaches. This experiment evaluated the combined effects of green manure (cowpea residues) and biochar (from maize stover) on soil fertility and maize performance in marginal lands in northern Ghana. Treatments improved soil organic carbon, pH, and nutrient retention.
Maize yield increased by 42% under integrated treatments, with enhanced root biomass and nutrient uptake. Soil microbial activity and aggregation were also improved. The synergy between green manure and biochar supports regenerative agriculture in degraded landscapes.
