Abstract

This study analyzed the economic viability of export-oriented horticulture (cut flowers and vegetables) in Ethiopia. Value chain mapping, cost-benefit analysis, and stakeholder interviews were conducted with producers, exporters, and policymakers. The analysis considered input costs, logistics, and market fluctuations.
Results revealed a positive net margin for commercial farms but lower returns for smallholders due to high postharvest losses and limited access to cold chain infrastructure. Public-private partnerships and logistics investments were identified as critical enablers for smallholder participation in global markets.
