The cultivation of the potato (Solanum tuberosum) is one of the most widespread in the department of Nariño, Colombia and constitutes a significant set of assets in the livelihood strategy adopted by the producing households. However, the challenges faced by this crop may limit the asset base of these households and thus make them more vulnerable. This research proposes a livelihood study following the Department for International Development (DFID) approach. Taking into account this conceptual framework, quantitative data derived from the application of surveys were obtained to 769 potato-producing households in 21 municipalities of the department of Nariño, previously classified in micro, small and medium-sized producers. The results indicate that 1. The population is heavily dependent on cultivation, 2. The assessed assets differ between micro, small and medium-sized producers, 3. Cultural and traditional aspects such as community and collective work in the minga (Ayni) or seed exchange are in decline and 4. the diversity of socio-economic and agroecological assets is poor. On the basis of the analysis carried out, it can be concluded that, if urgent and timely shock measures are not taken, such as the regulation of market prices and the development of social inclusion programmes aimed at reducing poverty, potato production loses viability as a livelihood strategy for the inhabitants of this region.
